Knitting… God does it, so should we!!

So, I recently stumbled upon an opportunity for our girls ministry to take some knitting classes at a local, um, knittery? Anyway, so it got me thinking — what does KNITTING have to do with the Bible? Can I justify taking girls out to go knitting — just for fun? Don’t get me wrong there is GREAT VALUE in building relationships and learning life-skills… but right now, I just want to teach you all how much GOD loves you, not just how much I love you.
So — it got me thinking… and I was reminded that some of my MOST FAVORITE Bible verses and stories are about knitting. Kind of. First of all, if you have been around me for any length of time, you have probably heard me share one of my most favorite Bible passages – - Psalm 139 –
“Oh Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all of my ways. Before the word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord…. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mothers womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full and well.”
The Lord KNITS us together in our mothers womb. I cannot get over how amazing and crazy and intimate that is. As you take the knitting class, you’ll discover that so much goes into just knitting a scarf. You have to pick out your needles, the right size needle, the yarn, the pattern, and then you put time and care into making it. I can’t imagine all that would go into knitting a person together?! God had so many options to choose from as He knit you together in your mothers womb… and YOU are his finished product, carefully knitted together with love and care… and not only that – a PURPOSE! You aren’t going to put time, money, sweat and tears into a scarf and then NOT wear it, right? You choose what purpose it will serve – to keep you warm? to look good? Formal? Informal? Light weight? silk? wool?
God has knitted you together with love, care and a purpose.
Another knitting passage I like is the story about Jonothan and David in 1st Samual. David and Jonathan were the best of friends.. and the Bible describes their hearts as being knitted together. I have a friend, Tara, and as we’ve shared our lives together and depended on one another — we reference this passage and describe our friendship like Jonothan’s and David’s -
1 Sam 18:1: As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
As the Lord creates friendships and relationships in your lives, It is very important that you guard who your soul is knitted to. We know that sex and marriage bind hearts and bodies together — but we rarely think of friendships as being something that influences us in a major way. As we go throughout our lives, friends will influence us in huge ways. Make sure that your friends are Christians who love Jesus and want the best for you. Jonathan risked his life, gave away his throne and swapped his allegiance for David. He believed that David was God’s man, and wanted to do his part in promoting David and keeping him safe so that the Lords will would be accomplished.
Knitting is a GREAT way to illustrate how God put us together in his womb and how he knits the hearts of his believers together… So, I want to invite you to come and learn to knit with me!!
We will be going to Downtown Knits in Apex in October for a beginner knitting class…
The total cost will be around $30 – that includes instruction, knitting needles and a spool of yarn. Let me know if you are interested!! Until then, reflect on how GOOD and crafty God is.
